Enter the A-number (like A3106) to see exactly which iPhone you have.
Where do I find my model number?
- Open Settings → General → About.
- Next to Model Number you’ll see a part number (like MTUV3LL/A). Tap it once and it changes to the A-number.
- Phone won’t turn on? On iPhone 8 or later with a SIM tray, it’s printed inside the SIM tray slot. With no SIM tray, look inside the charging port. On iPhone 7 or earlier, it’s on the back.
How to Use the iPhone Model Number Lookup
Type your iPhone’s model number, the letter A followed by four digits, into the box above. You’ll instantly see which iPhone it is, the year it came out, which countries that exact version was sold in, and the latest iOS version it can run. Just the four digits (like 2849) works too.
It’s handy when you’re buying a used iPhone and want to confirm it’s the model the seller claims, when you need the exact model for a repair quote or a case, or when a phone won’t turn on and the model number is the only clue.
How to Find Your iPhone Model Number
According to Apple’s instructions, there are three places to look:
- In Settings: open Settings → General → About. Next to Model Number you’ll see a part number. Tap it and it changes to the model number starting with A.
- In the SIM tray slot: on iPhone 8 or later with a SIM tray, remove the tray and look inside the slot in bright light. The number is on the upper side, the side with the display.
- In the charging port or on the back: on an iPhone without a SIM tray, look inside the USB-C or Lightning connector, on the side facing the display. On iPhone 7 or earlier, it’s printed on the back.
Model Number vs Part Number: What’s the Difference?
Settings first shows a part number, something like MTUV3LL/A. That identifies the exact configuration sold, including color, storage and country. The model number (the A-number) identifies the hardware model and its regional version. Every iPhone 15 Pro Max sold in the United States is A2849, whatever its color or storage. If you enter a part number into the lookup above, it will remind you to tap it first to reveal the A-number.
Why One iPhone Has Several Model Numbers
Apple makes regional versions of each iPhone, with different cellular hardware or SIM setups. That’s why the iPhone 15 Pro Max has four model numbers: one for the United States, one for Canada, Japan, Mexico and several other countries, one for China mainland, Hong Kong and Macao, and one for everywhere else. For recent models, Apple’s list notes that US versions have no SIM tray and are eSIM only. That’s worth knowing before buying an imported phone.

Know Your Model — Now What?
Check whether it still gets updates with the iOS compatibility checker and the current iOS update status. Get a repair cost estimate for your exact model. If you’re buying used, check Settings → General → About for parts and service history too. An “Unknown Part” battery message means the battery was replaced with a non-genuine or unverified part.
